The elbow or elbow joint is one of the least vulnerable joints in terms of exposure to damage, but it may be subject to injuries that constitute a problem in its movement and cause pain to the person.
Among the most common problems in this elbow joint:
Inflammation of the tendons of the elbow joint (tennis elbow).
or lateral epicondylitis, It is an injury that occurs in the tendons of the elbow joint due to excessive movement and excessive pressure on the wrist area.
It was named so due to its common occurrence in tennis players who perform movements against the natural direction of the elbow. But it is an injury that may also occur to non-tennis players who make repetitive movements of the elbow against the natural direction of movement.
Symptoms:
Inability to carry items with the affected arm.
– Feeling pain when doing simple activities that require moving your arm.
treatment:
– Rest in preparation for follow-up treatment with a physiotherapist at the Egyptian Center for Physiotherapy.
– The physiotherapist will train you to use belts that are installed around the injured elbow.
– Choosing the appropriate therapeutic exercises for your conditions, such as eccentric exercises in various forms.
– Using some devices such as lasers, shockwaves, and sound waves.
– Moving the joint through manual therapy to reduce pressure on the tendons.
Arthritis diseases
One of the common injuries in the elbow joint is arthritis due to a number of diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis – osteoarthritis – osteochondritis dissecans.
treatment: The physiotherapist develops a treatment program consisting of a set of exercises that the injured person performs continuously in order to strengthen the joint and increase the flexibility of the ligaments and tendons surrounding it.
Ankylosing spondylitis
Or Olecranon bursitis, which is an inflammation of the serous sac that is filled with fluid and whose function is to prevent friction and absorb shocks. It is located at the pointed outer edge of the elbow joint. When this cyst is inflamed, swelling occurs in the elbow joint and negatively affects its movement.
treatment: After treating the inflammation with medications and analgesics, the physiotherapist’s task comes to develop a program to restore the movement of the joint to normal and to strengthen the joint and tendons with a set of exercises to avoid infection in the future.
Elbow sprain or dislocation
The elbow joint consists of 3 bones that come together to form the well-known elbow shape. The dislocation occurs when the three bones deviate from their normal course, and thus the dislocation becomes total. Or one of these bones derailed, thus becoming a partial dislocation.
Symptoms:
Unbearable severe pain
Bump and deformity in the elbow joint
Redness, inflammation and swelling
Inability to move the joint
treatment:
The patient may need surgery to treat the dislocation. or to restore a dislocation without surgery, However, after the treatment, the patient needs to rely on the Egyptian Center for Physiotherapy to undergo a rehabilitation program to restore the movement of the joint to normal without pain and to strengthen the muscles, tendons and tissues to prevent any future injury.
Elbow fracture
The injury usually occurs from a severe collision with a solid body as a result of an accident such as a traffic accident or a direct fall from a height on the elbow. This leads to a crack or fracture of one or more of the elbow bones.
Symptoms:
Unbearable severe pain
Bump and deformity in the elbow joint
Sometimes there is a bleeding wound in the elbow area
Feeling cold in the hand and sometimes losing feeling in the arm and fingers.
Inability to move the joint
treatment : Sometimes the patient needs surgical intervention. Sometimes only a splint is needed for the fracture area with a sling to lift the arm load and keep the joint stable.
The joint may become stiff, which requires an elaborate physiotherapy program that you can rely on the Egyptian Center for Physiotherapy to develop and implement to restore your joint to its normal state.
